Every March, spring is right around the corner. The snow is melting, temperatures are hitting a luke warm 50 degrees, the occasional cold front smothers the suburbs with a blizzard, the flowers are budding, swiffers are swiffing, green bagels are selling like hot cakes, and love is in the air. March has something for everyone. And by everyone I mean lightweight pants, fur lined jackets, gardeners, cleaning services, bagel boss, and the lonely. However, for everyone else who isn't getting a jump on their spring cleaning, a momentous sporting event has begun. The 2009 NCAA March Madness Tournament started up yesterday. After hours and hours of analyzing every match up and re-writing my bracket about thirty times, I finally have the recipe for success. And by recipe for success I mean a bracket where I picked every winner correctly. At least after Day 1 I did. I could get into every single game and spit out every tid-bit of information I know, but I'll spare you the haphazard commentary. I'm sure anyone who is interested has heard enough from Dick Vitale and Digger Phelps everyday for the past week. So to get into the more important games, my final four is Louisville vs. Memphis, Duke vs. UNC. My Championship match-up is Memphis vs. UNC, with Memphis coming out on top of the heap after a high paced track meet. Despite the fact that Memphis didn't show up yesterday and had a tough time with Cal St. Northridge (who?), I think that with their "we get no respect from ESPN" hard nosed defense, a great point guard in Tyreke Evans, and occasional up surd scoring outbursts from the likes of Roburt Sallie, they have what it takes to be cutting down the nets in a few weeks. Don't get me wrong, the Tarheels have an outstanding squad. But I think that an injury troubled Ty Lawson is going to be their Kryptonite. And if the tournament goes according to my bracket he will have to face elite guards Pargo (Gonzaga), Johnny Flinn (Syracuse), the combination of Nolan Smith and Elliot Williams (Duke) and then Tyreke Evans of Memphis in consecutive games. Even though they do have one of the greatest college basketball players ever in Tyler Hansborough, a great scorer in Wayne Ellington, and role players in Danny Green and Ed Davis, unhealthy Ty Lawson= no championship trophy. I could go on and on and on about college hoops, but this is my opinion in a nutshell, a really really tiny nutshell. I'm hoping someone will actually read this, comment, throwing their hat into the March Madness ring. Until then I'll be watching the Marquette vs. Utah St. game thinking "What in the World is going on??"
